Our day started early in San Antonio. The skies were overcast when we departed and, believe it or not, the temps were cool. In fact, we all had to don sweatshirts and jackets at the first stop for gas. It was refreshing...and the miles started to fly by. The air was redolent with sage and mesquite. And just like clockwork, someone turned on the heat.
White shirts were the order of the day and we found that dousing ourselves
with water further cooled things down. The truckers we encountered on the road were rather accommodating, actually moving over to let us pass.
(Note to self—Go braless more often.)
Today we encountered “cross winds”—There are even signs for them. They weren’t mean or nasty, just a tad vexing. The expanses afforded us views of dust devils spinning into the sky.
Late afternoon brought us to El Paso, TX. We met Daniel Chavarria at Barnett’s H-D. After freshening up, Daniel and his lovely wife Claudia, (they have three lovely girls!) escorted us to Juarez, Mexico for dinner. The food was outstanding and we had our own personal magician perform at our table. We had a (one) beer. Then Daniel took us on a tour of the locale. He was amazing. Highlights included the first church built in Juarez, the first government building, and a photo op with a member of the Policia, in shorts, worthy of the Chippendales.
(Oh, he was CALIENTE!) We all came very close to breaking the law – Frisk me! No, frisk me!
We made it back over the border in no time.
Oh yeah, we rode 560.5 miles to El Paso today and tacked on another 31.5 for a total of 591.5 miles ridden today. |
